Framing

We have started our framing!
The lumber was delivered on Monday.
And we started working on the headers.

On Tuesday, Weldon got a huge splinter that went all the way through his pinkie finger. I didn't get a picture, because he was in so much pain and it took us a little while to get it out.

Saturday, Keith and Denise and family, Weston and Jessica, and U. Marty came over to help us get the rest of the headers built and also lay out all the walls.

Sunday, Keith, Weldon and U. Marty went over after lunch and started building walls.
Right as we were finishing up dinner that evening, Weldon calls to ask if we could come out and help them set up the walls that they had built. So we head out there and get them done just as it was getting dark.

Board and Batten

A few posts back I loaded some pictures of our house plans.
Front elevation

We are wanting a more rustic appeal to our house. We came up with a few ideas and thought it might be cool to do cedar shakes on the gables along with the siding and rock to break things up a bit.We had a few pictures in mind...

But the more we thought about it, the more we were certain that we wouldn't get the same look.
All the ideas we had have a smaller portion of shakes in relation to the rest of the rock and siding.
So with how big our gables are it would be a different look than what we are wanting.
There would be a LOT of shakes to a little siding and a little rock.
So we started searching again for ideas.

This is the front elevation of the original house plans.

So we thought maybe we could go with all board and batten.

This particular one is a timber frame home, and the entire house is really cool!
I decided to trace our front elevation and draw in the board and batten to get an idea of what it might look like.
We really like it!

We are planning on doing a metal roof and so it will give it more of a barn-style feel. Like the picture second to last of the ideas. We aren't 100% sure on the paint color. I have some samples painted on a couple pieces of siding. But once we trim out the outside I'll paint a section to see if we like it.
We're liking how it's all coming together.

Foundation Continued...

Last weekend we did not go to camp. We stayed and worked on our house. The plumbing was completed, but we had to finish up the duct work. We ran out of parts Friday evening, and so Saturday Weldon ran into to town to get what we needed to finish up. Unfortunately, the store was closed. :(  So we just hauled sand the rest of the weekend. And did whatever else we could do. It was a bummer that we couldn't get everything done that we wanted to.
On Tuesday, Weldon was able to get the parts. And that evening we were able to make more headway.
This is Tuesday evening. You can tell that we had hauled a bunch of sand in for the slab.

Our bedroom and bathroom was the last of the duct work that needed to be done.

All of this duct work is what we had worked on all last week.

Wednesday meeting was canceled because of the amount of people that came home from camp sick. And so Weldon and I went out and finished caulking all the joints. We had to move one vent that was too far off the wall. We me the guy doing the slab, and he said if we got it all ready that night, than they would be able to pour on Thursday! So that's what we did!!!

Doesn't it look great! As Weldon said, "I can't wait to start nailing some stick together."
We are looking forward to starting the framing.
We haven't been able to order the framing material, because we ended up changing several things on the plans. We'll have to get with U. Marty to make those adjustments before we can give the plans to the supplier.
I hope it will be soon!

The Place We'll Call Home

The place that we bought in Arcadia was an abandoned home site. There were two mobile homes that had been partially stripped. And a cinder ...
